<Below article was lightly post-edited based on a machine translation output.>

Title "Things to consider before saying I can't use this machine translation"

There are quite a few clients who have just purchased because the MT salesman makes a sales talk, such as "Our MT has an accuracy of about 900 TOEIC points." However, when the client used it, he lamented, "This MT is not usable at all."

One of the complaints I often hear in various articles and SNS is "I tried a certain MT, but it didn't work."

The point to be discussed here is to clarify the boundaries of "usable or unusable". Also, the definition of "usable" should be clear.

This means that our in-house translation staff has 2-3 years of MTPE experience. They have many years of translation experience. They can translate from scratch without MT. The technical (scientific) knowledge of their particular field is very deep. The MT that the staff judges as "usable" will not necessarily be the "usable" MT for the entire industry.

You should also consider the nature of PE personnel. Even if a major rewrite is required, a staff member who can handle the daily tasks can determine that the MT is still usable.

Conversely, an "ultra-tempered" person like me would judge that it couldn't be used. And if you judge that you can't use it, your skills may be low.

So, if someone evaluates that this MT is not usable, you will not know if it is the same as your rating.

At least any MT currently on the market is "useable" based on our assessment.

<The following article was translated using machine translation.>

Now that machine translation is so popular, is it enough to translate 2500 words a day as a professional translator?

Currently, translation using machine translation is standardized. It can be said that translating using CAT tools is also standardized. You can also search for terms using the Internet. Is it enough or not enough for a translator to translate 2500 words in a day (8 hours) in this environment? I want to write about this point.

In conclusion, if you can translate 2,500 words a day, it's no problem to call yourself a pro. Some claim that post-editing with machine translation could do more, but wait a minute. For example, when translating a highly difficult text such as a patent specification, there are times when the translation must be interrupted. This is the time when the translator is looking up terms and technical content (during this time, translation is stopped). Post-editing could translate about 5,000 words a day, but if you translate that many words in a single day, you'll have zero research time. In other words, there is no guarantee that this translator's translation will be accurate.

In the case of a professional translator, saying "I can translate 2500 words a day" means that the review has been completed. If the translator could translate perfectly using machine translation, wouldn't it be enough to have 2500 words a day?

In our company, the number of words that can be translated a day depends on the translator. Some staff members can post-edit 8,000 words a day. Some staff can't translate more than 2500 words a day with or without machine translation. Another staff member can only translate 2000 words a day.

If I visit my client's office for business and say, "Each translator can translate 2500 words per day on average," the client will not ask for more. I've never seen a client looking for more productivity.
